Health and Safety

Here at Milkyway we are very serious towards Health and safety within our nursery building and outdoor play area, we think about the welfare of all children, parents , visitors, staff etc. We ensure that all of our checks are completed on a yearly basis or as and when they are due e.g. gas and electric checks, which are completed by professional experts . We receive very good feedback from Food hygiene  and Environmental health officers who inspect our nursery setting.  We also keep our fire procedures and risk assessments upto date.

Fire Drills
The safe evacuation of the building is of primary importance.

  • A written fire drill will be on display at all times. This will include information on   ‘raising the alarm’ and the named place of safety away from the building.

  •  · A practice fire drill will be carried out bimonthly. Routes and times/days will be varied and recorded.

  • · Fire appliances will be checked annually in conjunction with GMBA and the staff will be made aware of their position.

  • · All visitors will be made aware of fire evacuation procedure.

  • · New staff will take part in a fire evacuation drill, as part of their induction, within the first week of their appointment.

Outings

  • Equal opportunities exist for all children i.e. that children with disabilities and cultural requirements etc. are included.

  • A first aider will be in attendance that has a current paediatric first aid certificate.

  •  A written risk assessment will be conducted prior to the outing and all staff will be made aware of this.

  • That safety is maintained whilst children board or exit vehicles or whilst walking.

  • There is access to a mobile phone by the whole group and by individual group leaders.

  • Adult/child ratios are adhered to and will be exceeded according to circumstances.

  • Essential records are carried at all times i.e. registration documents, medical forms and emergency contact details.

  • Headcounts are carried out on a regular basis when taking parents/ children on outings.

  • On registration parent/ carers sign a consent form for their child to go on outings with Milkyway staff.

Sickness

  • The child’s temperature will be taken and steps carried out to reduce the child’s temperature if necessary, i.e. remove clothing and apply cold compress.

  • The child will be made comfortable, with their well being monitored for any changes and given opportunity to rest in a quiet environment.

  • The parent will be contacted by the Manager on duty and notified of illness or concerns. They may be asked to collect the child from the play group, or advised to make G.P. appointment.

  • Milky Way play group follows the “Guidance on Infection Control in Schools and Other Childcare Settings” with regard to the exclusion of children from the play group with infectious illnesses. This includes the 48-hour exclusion for sickness and diarrhoea.
